What is A-Level Physical Education?​

You will analyse the physiological and psychological factors that underpin sports performance and explore the role of sport in society and the ethical and contemporary issues that impact sports performance in Britain. A Level Physical Education is a well-respected, academic A Level and is considered to be a science subject by many major universities.​

What will I learn?

1. Applied anatomy and physiology ​

Changes within the body systems prior to exercise, during exercise of differing intensities and during recovery in the Cardio-respiratory system, Neuromuscular System, Musculo-skeletal system and Energy systems.​

2. Skill acquisition​

Focuses on how skill is acquired and the impact of psychological factors on performance​

3. Sport and society ​

Develops knowledge and understanding of the interaction between, and the evolution of, sport and society.​

4. Exercise physiology ​

Learn about the adaptations to the body systems through training or lifestyle, and how these changes affect the efficiency of those systems.​

5. Biomechanical movement ​

Develop knowledge and understanding of motion and forces, and their relevance to performance in physical activity and sport.​

6. Sport psychology ​

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the role of sport psychology in optimising performance in physical activity and sport.​

7. Sport and society and the role of technology in physical activity and sport​

Develop knowledge and understanding of the interaction between, and the evolution of, sport and society and the technological developments in physical activity and sport.​

How will I be assessed?

  • 70% - Examination (2 x 2-hour exams)​

  • 30% - Practical performance/NEA (Ideally playing sport outside of school).​

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in Physical Education and two grade 6s in Combined Science or Triple Science (one ideally in Biology)​

Where can Physical Education take me?

A Level Physical Education is an excellent base for a university degree in sports science, sports management, healthcare, or exercise and health. It will allow you to attend the top sport and Science universities in the country. Physical Education can also complement further study in biology, human biology, physics, psychology, nutrition, sociology and many more.

A Level Physical Education can open up a range of career opportunities including sports development, sports coaching, physiotherapy, personal training or becoming one of the next generations of PE teachers. The transferable skills you learn through your study of Physical Education, such as decision making, and independent thinking are also useful in any career path you choose to take.
